The PlayStation 5 is becoming more available than it once was, but even with the increased frequency of restocks, Sony’s latest console remains a chore to get a hold of. If you’ve been savvy enough to secure a PS5 of your own, however, getting the right accessories can help ensure you get the most out of your new console.

From headsets and spare DualSense controllers to M.2 SSDs that allow you to easily expand your console’s storage capacity — that’s a thing now, after all — these are just a few PS5 accessories we suggest picking up, some of which occasionally go on discount.

Extra controllers

First off, there’s the controller. Every new PS5 includes a white DualSense controller. Unlike the last-gen DualShock controllers, the DualSense has a two-color scheme and a more ergonomic design. The controller also features adaptive triggers, a built-in microphone, and haptic feedback, with some games taking advantage of the controller’s features to provide an added level of immersion.

In addition to working with the PS5, the DualSense can wirelessly connect to Android and iOS devices — along with a PC, if your computer supports Bluetooth. If not, you can connect the DualSense to a PC using a USB cable.

The standard white and midnight black controllers usually retail for around $69, but sometimes you can find them on sale for around $60. As for the newer DualSense colors — including the red, purple, blue, and pink variants — they usually sell for $74, a slightly higher price tag. The DualSense is a good successor to the PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4 controller, given the improvements; however, it doesn’t sport the greatest battery life, so having a spare handy can be helpful even outside of local multiplayer games. If you already own a DualShock 4, though, you can still use the controller on the PS5, but it will only work while playing PS4 games.

DualSense Charging Station

With Sony’s DualSense Charging Station, you can charge two wireless DualSense controllers at the same time, allowing you to free up the USB-C ports on the PS5 and ensuring your local multiplayer sessions go off without a hitch. After at first being notoriously difficult to find, we have only seen the occasional discount on the charging station of about $10 off. Discounts are pretty infrequent, however, so keep an eye out for big Sony promotions or events like Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day.

User-replaceable console covers

While replacement console covers for the PS5 may not be essential, they remain a fun way to customize your system. Sony’s user-replaceable covers also come in an array of colors to match the DualSense controllers, allowing you to outfit your console in black, red, purple, blue, or pink. Whether you have a regular PS5 with a disc drive or the Digital Edition, these cost $54.99 each — though be sure you get the right one for your console. At this time, they’re only available direct from Sony.

The PS5 design is a bit polarizing to some, and these covers are a unique way to make it blend in better with your home or go the other way and add a pop of color. It’s your choice. There are no wrong answers here, but keep in mind that the correct answer is always black.

The ideal TV to plug your PS5 into

Looking for a new 4K TV that can take full advantage of the PS5’s capabilities? Verge reviewer Chris Welch has you covered with a range of TVs from TCL, LG, and Samsung. They all come in different sizes and prices, but working well with the PS5 is something they each have in common.

However, our favorite option remains LG’s excellent C1 OLED from last year, which comes with HDMI 2.1 support on all four inputs, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support. Right now, Amazon is selling the 65-inch model for $1,596.99 instead of its full price of $2,499.99. LG’s newer C2 is also now readily available, but we don’t think the improvements are worth the higher price tag over the C1.

The PS5’s proprietary webcam and streaming camera

If you are interested in using your PS5 to livestream video games or broadcast your gameplay with friends, you’ll want to pick up the PlayStation 5 HD Camera, which is available for around $60 at Amazon and Best Buy. The successor to the PS4 camera, the HD peripheral includes dual 1080p lenses and allows you to remove the background of your camera’s feed and replace it with something else.

Wireless gaming headsets

Sony’s Pulse 3D Wireless Headset may be worth the $100 price tag if you want a wireless model that allows the audio to shine in select PS5 exclusives. It sounds fantastic with titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls, as well as more recent hits like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Sony also makes a black version of the headset for the same asking price, and though we’ve seen few deals on either model, they have been discounted to as low as $89 in the past.

However, out of all of our favorite headsets, we found the SteelSeries Arctis 7P Plus to be the best gaming headset for PlayStation consoles. It’s pricier than Sony’s aforementioned Pulse 3D Wireless at $169.99, though it does occasionally go on sale for around $140 or $150 at retailers like Amazon. In exchange for that higher price tag, you’re getting a comfier headset than the Pulse, one that offers better mic quality and a more intuitive button layout.

A PlayStation controller with a Netflix button

Like the PS4, Sony’s newest console also touts its own media remote. Like most consoles, the PS5 doubles as a competent streaming device, granting you access to services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Plus and allowing you to control 4K Blu-ray playback if you’re using the disc-based PS5. It doesn’t provide any additional functionality over the PS5’s DualSense controller, but it’s smaller and more comfortable, with dedicated launch buttons for some of the more popular streaming services. Read our review.

Expandable storage (both internal and external)

After an initial beta testing phase, you can now add specific M.2 SSDs to the PS5, making it possible to increase your console’s storage capacity. If you’re looking for a surefire bet that’s affordable, we recommend the WD Black SN850 drives, which run at a blistering 7,000MB/s (read speeds) and 4100MB/s (write speeds) and are ideal if you want to quickly install an SSD and not have to worry about it afterward. Right now, the 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB models are all on sale with a heatsink, with the 500GB model going for $89.99 instead of its typical $169.99.

For an even faster alternative, Samsung’s 980 Pro is another PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD that’s capable of sequential read speeds of up to 7,000MB/s and write speeds of up to 5,000MB/s. These specs make it a great choice for a modern PCIe 4.0-equipped PC or for the PS5 with the required heatsink.

Open PS5 with expansion slot showing.

On the other end of the storage spectrum, traditional hard drives still have their place in with modern gaming consoles, especially if you like having lots of games downloaded but want to save room on your SSDs. Seagate’s external hard drive is great for storing your PS4 games on your PS5 without taking up precious SSD space. Right now, you can buy the 4TB model for $109.99 instead of $124.99 at Amazon and Best Buy. You won’t be able to use it to play PS5 titles, but you can off-load them onto a hard drive like this one. Think of it as a PS4 drive and also cold storage for PS5 games to save you from re-downloading them.

PlayStation Plus subscription

What good is a PlayStation without games? A PlayStation Plus subscription offers you access to online multiplayer, exclusive discounts, free monthly games, and access to the PlayStation Plus collection, a catalog of PlayStation 4 hits you can download and play on PS5 at no additional cost.

The service was recently split into three tiers: PlayStation Plus Essential, PlayStation Plus Extra, and PlayStation Plus Premium. The Essential tier gets you, essentially, the original PS Plus benefits outlined above for $9.99 a month or $59.99 annually. If you want access to a selection of existing and new PS5 games (such as Demon’s Souls, Returnal, Stray, and more), then PlayStation Plus Extra has you covered for $14.99 a month or $99.99 annually. The top-tier PlayStation Plus Premium has all the lower two have, plus it adds game trials and a classic catalog of PS1, PS2, PSP, and cloud streaming PS3 games for $17.99 a month or $119.99 annually.

At this time, you can’t buy prepaid subscription cards for the new PlayStation Plus membership tiers. If you have any older PlayStation Plus cards, however, those can be redeemed for the same length subscription under the Essential tier — though converting it to Extra or Premium will net you fewer months on a sliding scale.

A racing wheel for you Gran Turismo fans

This may be a bit more niche, but it’s not often that a new racing game like Gran Turismo 7 comes along to flex the graphical power of Sony’s latest console. Despite its bit of drama around microtransactions and patches, the latest Gran Turismo title has proven itself an impressive installment and a return to form for the iconic racing series. And while racing with the DualSense controller’s haptics firing off is certainly satisfying, no controller substitutes the satisfaction of playing with a proper wheel.

Luckily, the Thrustmaster T248 is a great wheel and pedal set for the PS5, PS4, and even PC. The premium, all-in-one solution may cost a pretty penny at $399.99, but it has been on sale for as much as $100 off. Check out our review, and read all about its impressive force feedback and feel. Just be aware that you may never want to go back to playing racing games with a controller again.

We already knew Blizzard is working on a new entry in the Diablo series that is designed for mobile devices. And today, timed to coincide with Activision Blizzard’s Q1 2022 earnings report, the company announced that Diablo Immortal will release on Android and iOS on June 2nd — and, surprise, on PC, too, in open beta.

According to the developers, Diablo Immortal will have cross-play and cross-progression with controller and keyboard support on PC.

Set after Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, Diablo Immortal is a free-to-play MMORPG. The game will be online-only, and, according to the development team, it will introduce new characters, storylines, and additional content as part of a “living, breathing, and constantly evolving experience.”

Players are able to pre-register ahead of the June 2nd release date here.

Blizzard has lately been a firehose of information on new games and a long list of highly anticipated but constantly delayed titles. It’s working on a World of Warcraft mobile experience (with the earnings update saying it’ll release more details on that in the coming weeks) and a brand new survival game. Elsewhere in the Blizzard ecosystem, Overwatch 2 will enter closed beta starting April 26th, with internal testing on Diablo IV underway.

Update November 27th, 2:20PM ET: Amazon has sold out of PlayStation 5 consoles. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date when we hear of another round of restocks.

Sony’s latest gaming console, the PS5, is one of many gaming gadgets that are hard to find in stock right now due to mostly online-only sales. If you are trying to get your hands on one, Amazon has restocked PS5 consoles right now, while supplies last (these links will help you add it directly to your cart — Disc, Digital). The consoles are only available for Amazon Prime subscribers, continuing a trend of retailers restricting access to consoles for paying subscribers only. If you can’t add it to your cart, keep trying, occasionally the sites restock over a period of a few minutes. We will update this post once Amazon confirms it’s out of stock.

I strongly suggest buying a one-year membership to PlayStation Plus, as the perks of having a subscription are great for PS5 users. Most notably, it nets you access to the PlayStation Plus Collection, which is a digital library of some of the most popular first- and third-party titles released on the PS4 such as Bloodborne and The Last of Us Remastered. I also advise picking up an extra DualSense controller.

PlayStation 5 deals

While you might not be able to find a PS5 console in time for the holidays (fingers are crossed for you, though), you can at least stock up on games and accessories that would normally cost you more than they do right now. Keep in mind that all of the deals below (with the exception of the digital games from the PlayStation Store) are the disc versions of the games, requiring the $500 PS5 console that has a disc drive. Here are the best deals currently running:

Taylor Lyles <![CDATA[The PS5 and Xbox Series X are available at Walmart again (Update: Sold Out)]]> https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/6/22386165/ps5-xbox-series-x-restocks-walmart 2021-05-06T15:42:42-04:00 2021-05-06T15:42:42-04:00

Update: Walmart’s restock of the PS5 and Xbox Series X seems to be over. If you’re looking for some accessories to go with a console, we have some picks below.

Due to the global electronic component shortage, getting your hands on a PS5 or Xbox Series X has been challenging. Fortunately, if you want another shot at getting either next-gen console, Walmart has done a surprise drop right now for both systems, while supplies last.

As seen on Walmart’s website, the PS5 digital edition and Xbox Series X gaming consoles are available for purchase. We’re noticing that stock is coming in and out, so stick with the page for a few minutes and keep refreshing to see if you can add one to your cart.

Once you get your PS5, if you are looking to buy some games, some of the hottest titles such as Returnal and Spider-Man: Miles Morales are available on the console. Resident Evil Village is releasing tomorrow, May 7th.

If you are worried about not having a ton of storage available to store all of your games, the latest PS5 update allows you to store PS5 games on an external hard drive. Although you cannot play these games on an external HDD, this is still good to help manage which games are currently stored on your SSD.

Xbox fans, once you have secured Microsoft’s next-gen console, if you are unsure what type of games to buy, a subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate might be the best option for you. It includes a robust library of first- and third-party titles for you to download and play. And unlike the PS5, you can purchase a 1TB SSD expansion to add to the Xbox’s base storage (512GB on the Series S, 1TB on the X), though it is not cheap.

Taylor Lyles <![CDATA[The best video game subscription deals right now]]> https://www.theverge.com/22348957/best-video-game-subscription-playstation-plus-xbox-game-pass-nintendo-switch-online-deals-price-sale 2021-05-05T09:36:42-04:00 2021-05-05T09:36:42-04:00

Online game subscriptions are quite common in the gaming industry. Whether it’s a subscription for an online service for multiplayer gaming or Netflix-like services that provide access to a massive library of games to play, gaming subscriptions provide good incentives and a lot of value for many gamers.

While sales tend to stay steady throughout the year, these subscription services will hold promotions or discounts now and then.

PlayStation subscription deals

PlayStation Plus is arguably the most popular subscription service available on PlayStation consoles. Subscribing comes with a few perks outside of occasional discounts on the PlayStation Store and playing (most) games online. Each month, Sony provides a rotation of games you can play for free so long as you have an active subscription. If you own a PS5, you have access to the PS Plus Collection, a digital library of “generation-defining games” originally released for the PS4.

A one-year subscription to PlayStation Plus normally retails for $60, but Eneba tends to sell digital keys for US subscribers for less than half of its usual price. Right now, US players can grab a year for $27 by using the offer code VERGEMAYPROMO at checkout. You can even get two years’ worth of service for $54. Otherwise, it is $60 per year at places like Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop. The service is also available for $10 a month or $25 for three months.

PlayStation Now is Sony’s cloud gaming service, allowing subscribers to stream games released on the PS2, PS3, and PS4 on their PS4, PS5, and PCs. The service tends to release new games into the library regularly.

New users can do a seven-day free trial to get a feel for the service. Otherwise, a monthly subscription costs $10, three months of the service in advance costs $25, and a year-long subscription is $60. Eneba has a one-year subscription available for $59, which is $1 off its usual price although Sony recently had a promotion where new subscribers could get one month free of charge. Alternatively, it is $60 at typical retailers, including Amazon and GameStop.

Xbox subscription deals

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is Microsoft’s flagship gaming subscription right now. Subscribing to this service nets you access to Game Pass Console and Game Pass PC. It bundles Xbox Live Gold, a premium online service. Additionally, Microsoft’s cloud gaming service, xCloud, is included with Game Pass Ultimate.

You can choose between a monthly plan for $15 or three months for $45. If you are new to Game Pass, you can get your first month for $1, and it will convert to a $15 monthly charge unless you cancel. If you are not a new user of the service but want to renew your subscription for one month only, Eneba is selling a single month for $20. If you want three months but don’t want to be billed automatically, you can grab it for $40 at Amazon or for its usual $45 price tag at GameStop, Newegg, and Walmart.

Outside of Game Pass Ultimate, Microsoft has two separate versions of the service, including one specifically for Xbox consoles, which is probably the better choice for gamers who solely play on the Xbox and are not interested in the other incentives offered by the Ultimate Tier. Again, you can get this model for $1 if you are new. Otherwise, it’s $10 a month, $60 for six months, or $120 for a full-year subscription.

Another subscription available on consoles is EA Play, which provides access to a slew of titles published by Electronic Arts. It’s available on a few platforms, including Xbox and PlayStation, but the service is included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate now. If you are subscribed to Game Pass Ultimate and buy an EA Play subscription, it will convert to a certain number of days or months.

Nintendo subscription deals

Nintendo Switch Online is a good service for owners of Nintendo’s hybrid console if they want to do the following: play online with friends, ensure that your saves are backed up in the cloud, or get access to a slate of on-demand games from the original Nintendo console and SNES console era. It comes in two forms: an individual membership, which provides access and perks through a single account, or a family membership, which provides access to the service via the same or multiple Switch consoles.

You can get a seven-day free trial for both. Otherwise, an individual membership costs $4 for one month, $8 for three, or $20 for a full year. You can do it directly through Nintendo’s eShop on the Switch itself; retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Humble, GameStop, and Target also sell three-month or one-year subscriptions. The best deal currently is at Eneba, which is selling three months for $6 or a full year for $19.

Family Memberships only include a full-year subscription, which you can buy for $35 at Best Buy and the Nintendo eShop.

PC gaming subscription deals

Xbox Game Pass for PC is available as a standalone service for those with a gaming PC who do not want all of the perks available with Game Pass Ultimate. Like the console version, Game Pass PC is available for $10 a month or $1 for your first month if you are a new user. Typically, retailers sell the PC-only service for three months, which is normally priced at $30. Currently, Eneba has one month available for $8 or three months for $22.

EA Play is also available on PC, but the prices vary depending on whether you subscribe on Steam or Origin. If you subscribe to Steam, it is the same price as consoles ($5 per month, $30 annually). Origin has EA Play Pro, which costs $15 monthly or $100 per year. The key biggest difference between EA Play and Pro is the Pro version provides unlimited access to the publisher’s latest releases, similar to how Game Pass provides access to Xbox exclusives on the day those titles release.

Ubisoft Plus (formally UPlay Plus), like EA Play, is a gaming subscription service with a library of games published and developed by Ubisoft. You also receive access to new releases at launch, over 100 games in the library, and Amazon’s Luna and Google’s Stadia cloud gaming services. You can subscribe to a monthly plan, which is $15 each month.

Originally released in 2019, Humble Choice (formerly Humble Monthly) is a Humble Bundle gaming subscription. Each month, the company allows subscribers to choose from a curated list of 10 or more DRM-free games, which they can keep forever. Unlike some other services by the company, all of the games are revealed upfront. It comes in three tiers: Lite ($5 per month), Basic ($15 per month), and Premium ($20 per month).

Mobile game subscription deals

Released in 2019, Apple Arcade has its own dedicated tab located on the App Store. It is available on products that run iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS. It costs $5 per month, or you can get a year for just $50. All of the games available on the service are free of in-app purchases and pesky ads and the option to play these games offline. Subscribers can also share access with five other individuals via family sharing. New users can get a one-month free trial.

Google Play Pass serves as a direct competitor to Apple Arcade and is available on Android devices. It features over 800 apps and games with no ads or in-app purchases. You can subscribe for $5 monthly or $30 annually.

The latest iPad Pros are powered by the M1 chip. | Apple

Following the official reveal last week of the new model refreshes for the iMac and iPad Pros, all of which are powered by Apple’s own silicon — the M1 chip — preorders began for all three products today.

As spotted first by 9to5Toys, Expercom is offering an incentive if you pre-purchase any of the three new M1 products, with up to $147 in savings available depending on the configuration you select, making this the first time any of these three brand-new products have seen a discount yet.

The base M1 iMac is available for preorder at Expercom for as low as $1,233 ($66 off); this configuration includes 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. As noted previously, the configurations vary, but there are price reductions for multiple configurations.

The 2021 iPad Pros are the first in Apple’s tablet line to include the M1 processor. The 11-inch iPad Pro is more affordable with a starting price of $799. But Expercom is offering the base model, which includes 128GB of storage with Wi-Fi only, for $750 — $49 off its usual starting price. You can also select the option to get more storage or 5G network support, all of which vary in price depending on which configuration you choose.

Along with the 11-inch iPad Pro, the 12.9-inch model also receives a model refresh, which includes the M1 chip. This flagship tablet has a new Liquid Retina XDR Mini LED screen and starts at $1,099 for the base 128GB storage configuration with Wi-Fi only. But you can get this particular model for $1,032 at Expercom with up to $147 off if you get the highest storage configuration plus Wi-Fi and cellular support.

Mother’s Day is coming up; if you are looking for a good gift to give your mother, an Amazon Echo Show 8 might be a good gadget for consideration. Usually $130, Amazon, Best Buy, and Target have the device on sale for $105. If you’re looking for more Mother’s Day gift ideas, be sure to check out our Mother’s Day 2021 Gift Guide.

It took nearly three years, but Nintendo has finally given you a compelling reason to load up Super Mario Party on your Switch again. The new update significantly adds to the online component — which has been woefully lacking since launch.

Thanks to the latest update, Super Mario Party now allows you to play Mario Party, a board game mode where up to four players take turns competing against each other racing across the game board. It also added Partner Party, which is similar to Mario Party but pits two teams of two against each other. This the first time board games support online play. Additionally, 70 out of the 80 mini-games available in the game can now be played online. Before the update, Super Mario Party only allowed you to play 10 mini-games online.

According to the patch notes, there are two ways to play online, both of which require an active subscription to Nintendo Switch Online: Friend Match, which allows you to play with friends, or Private Game, which allows you to play with anyone using passwords.

Super Mario Party was released in October 2018, and it can be fun to play with friends, despite the potential rifts it can cause in your friendships. While the update seems a bit out of the blue, Super Mario Party expanding the online play options makes it another alternative for people looking for games that aren’t Jackbox or the frustrating online multiplayer in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Job Simulator, HTC Vive

Last week, Humble launched its Spring Into VR Bundle, which includes a pack of games for use with a virtual reality headset. Originally set to end on April 21st, the company has decided to extend the deal until April 28th, giving you more time to take advantage of it.

You can pay as little as $1 to receive one game or pay at least $15 to unlock all eight games available in the pack — once you’ve paid, you’ll get keys that you redeem on Steam. The bundle contains the following games, all of which are compatible with wired headsets that support Steam VR:

 • Borderlands 2 VR
 • Job Simulator
 • Sairento VR
 • Star Trek: Bridge Crew
 • Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality
 • Swords of Gurrah
 • Espire VR
 • Detached

If you have been keeping up with the news about next-gen consoles, you will know that it is extremely difficult to purchase any next-gen gaming system. This includes not only the PS5, but some of its accessories, like the HD Camera. If you managed to get your hands on a PS5 and are looking to buy this camera accessory, B&H Photo has the product in stock and has knocked $10 off its original price, bringing the price down to $50.

While we are on the topic of PS5 accessories on sale, the DualSense controller is back down to its lowest price of $60 at B&H Photo. When you purchase a PS5, it includes one DualSense controller, but if you plan to share this console with other people or play local co-op games with friends and family, you’re going to want to purchase an extra controller.

Finally, at our sister site, The Strategist‘s Two-Day (Actually Good) Sale is underway. The two-day event contains deals on over 40 items selected by The Strategist‘s editors. One highlight is Sony’s WH-1000XM4 headphones, which are marked down to $268 from $348 at B&H Photo.

After launching a little over a year ago, Call of Duty: Warzone is one of the most popular free-to-play titles right now, with 100 million people playing the battle royale shooter. Following a nuclear missile that destroyed the game’s map, the in-game city of Verdansk is back with a new map set in the year 1984, as seen in the announcement trailer above. This mirrors a similar move made by its competitor Fortnite, which destroyed its original map and replaced it with a new one in 2019.

Despite the shape and layout remaining the same as its predecessor, players will notice changes to most locations along with a 1980s vibe that fits the game’s new time period. Verdansk ’84, the name of the new map, has some alterations to make it a new location and not a direct reskin, while also becoming more closely integrated with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which is set in the same decade. Both games share content across one another, meaning weapons, cosmetics, and other in-game unlockables like killstreaks can be shared across both titles.

The debut of Verdansk ’84 serves as an official start to the third season of Call of Duty: Warzone and Black Ops Cold War, and it’s available now with plenty of new weapons added and a few old ones nerfed.
