Google just got a minimum one-week emergency stay before it has to change Android app store policy.

Here’s the entire court filing:

Google LLC (“Google”) has filed an emergency motion for an administrative stay of the district court’s permanent injunction, entered October 7, 2024, pending Google’s forthcoming motion to stay the injunction pending further appellate proceedings. Google’s emergency motion (Dkt. Entry No. 201) is granted. Google should file its motion to stay the injunction pending further appellate proceedings no later than August 8, 2025.

Google previously had two weeks to begin complying. Now it has three weeks, or longer — depends whether these judges think the full Ninth Circuit or Supreme Court will want to weigh in on the permanent injunction against Google.

The next BioShock game’s story reportedly isn’t up to snuff, so it (and its leaders) are getting overhauled.

2K isn’t denying Jason Schreier’s story: “We are working hard to set BioShock up for the best possible future. Right now, we have a good game, but we are committed to delivering a great one,” the publisher tells him.

X could face liability for failing to stop CSAM.

It’s a relatively narrow legal defeat, though. The Ninth Circuit Appeals Court ruled that X — Twitter, at the time of the lawsuit — isn’t protected by Section 230 for failing to report known child sexual abuse material to authorities, nor for designing a bad system to let users flag it. (It hasn’t been held liable for either; that will be argued later.) But the court found Section 230 blocked claims that it “amplified” CSAM by failing to scrub offending hashtags, and it said the controversial FOSTA exception didn’t come into play.

Fujifilm just hiked camera prices by hundreds of dollars and Canon may be next.

Hope you weren’t banking on a particular price for your next camera, because Trump’s new-and-improved tariffs have other plans. My former colleague Chris Welch reports the majority of Fujifilm cameras now cost more, and Canon has signaled higher prices too; Sigma has agreed to absorb the extra 5 percent tariffs that Trump just added to Japan.

Fuji prices could go higher still: PetaPixel says they’re based on 10 percent Japan tariffs, not the new 15 percent. Moment has an updated Fujifilm price list.

Turtle Beach updated its Pro BFG modular controller with Hall effect joysticks.

The Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded looks similar to the original released in 2022, but PDP is now owned by Turtle Beach which has updated the controller with Hall effect triggers and joysticks in its swappable modules.

The Reloaded also features a reconfigured fight stick module with six buttons “ergonomically optimized for gamers to place their wrist on the controller’s grip.” It’s available for preorder now for $209.99 in Xbox and PlayStation versions with shipping expected in late September.

Today I learned there’s a glowing color-changing level that’s easier to read.

I’m already a big fan of Franklin Sensors’ ProSensor M210 Stud Finder, but its $24.99 12-inch iLevel just became a must-have addition to my toolbox, as spotted by Core77.

It includes both horizontal and vertical bubble dials, but the entire thing glows using internal LEDs that change color from red to green once it’s perfectly horizontal or vertical, making the tool easier to use from afar, or in dark spots where you can’t see the bubbles.

The iLevel changes from glowing red to green the closer it is to level or plumb.
You can use still use the bubble dials, but the glow makes the iLevel easier to use from afar.
It’s also much easier to use in the dark without having to reach for a flashlight.

A New Hope is coming back to theaters ...in a couple of years.

2027 will mark the 50th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope’s debut, and to celebrate the occasion, Lucasfilm is putting the movie back in theaters beginning May 4th of that year — just a couple of weeks before Star Wars: Starfighter’s premiere.

This free app turns your MacBook’s trackpad into a makeshift scale.

Is it a good idea to keep your MacBook in the kitchen while you’re baking? Probably not, but it’s still good to know that developer Kris Shah has created a simple macOS app that can turn your Apple laptop’s trackpad into a makeshift scale, as spotted by Lifehacker.

Track Weight, available for free on GitHub, does require you to keep one finger resting on the trackpad to use it which is a bit inconvenient, but it’s surprisingly accurate.

Track Weight requires you to keep a finger touching your MacBook’s trackpad at all times to function, but there’s a button to reset the scale to zero before placing another object on it.

Apple TV Plus is about to get KPopped.

The streaming service dropped a trailer for its KPopped series, which has K-Pop and Western artists collabing on ‘stages’ — the K-Pop term for live performances with elaborate concepts. It’ll be hosted by PSY and Megan Thee Stallion, and features a stacked lineup including Itzy, KEP1ER, Ateez, STAYC, Patti Labelle (?!), the Spice Girls, Kesha, and Kylie Minogue.

As a K-Pop stan, this feels similar to Korean competition shows like Kingdom, which once produced this sick Deadpool-themed stage by Stray Kids.

Amazon Music is launching monthly recaps.

After rolling out its own take on Spotify Wrapped last year, Amazon Music now lets you view “insights,” which show the artists, songs, and podcasts you listened to the most during each month. Other music streaming platforms have started offering more frequent glimpses into user listening habits, too, with YouTube launching seasonal recaps and Apple Music delivering them on a monthly basis.

Google rolls out Deep Think to AI Ultra subscribers.

The advanced problem-solving model, first announced at I/O in May, is now available in the Gemini app for anyone signed up to Google’s $250 per month plan.

The version rolling out is a variant on the model that recently picked up Gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad. While that version took hours to solve complex math problems, the wide release is apparently much faster, but Google estimates it could still get Bronze.
