E3

For years, June has been filled with major game and hardware announcements from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, along with major publishers like Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, EA, and more. Starting in 2020, though, E3 has been very different. In 2021 the event was entirely virtual, and in 2022 it was canceled altogether. Despite plans to return to an in-person event in 2023, the show’s future remains uncertain.

E3 is officially over forever

In an interview with The Washington Post, ESA CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis confirms E3, once the biggest video game trade show in the world, is gone and never coming back.

E3 was a concentrated dose of gaming — and I’m going to miss it

Some of it sucked — the lines, the noise, the overpriced coffee — but it was also a rare opportunity to see a huge chunk of the games industry in one place.

They’re replacing E3 with a networking event in Vegas.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, once the most important video game show, got axed forever in 2023 — now, its former hosts have announced the Interactive Innovation Conference (“iicon”) this April. It’s invitation-only, billed as “A first-of-its-kind event bringing together leaders across industries to harness the transformative power of interactive entertainment” — even though the similar DICE exists.

Unlike DICE, all the biggest game companies are slated to attend this one. Remember that time E3 downsized to become a “Media & Business Summit”? It was nice and quiet!

RIP E3.

Even though I wrote earlier this year that E3 wouldn’t be coming back, I wanted to be wrong. I had hoped that E3 would somehow return to the grand show I loved following as a kid, but that’s not going to be the case. Tough day for a tough year in the video game industry.

E3 isn’t coming back
