Amazon finds a writer for its James Bond flick: Steven Knight.

Amazon announced its Q2 earnings results today, and at the same time said that Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, See, Dirty Pretty Things) will be the writer of its first 007 movie, which Denis Villeneuve is already set to direct.

According to Deadline’s inside sources, even with those roles locked down, it could be a while until we hear about who will carry on the starring role, as Knight works on the script and Villeneuve is finishing up Dune: Part Three.

Pray for the content moderators.

In director Uta Briesewitz’s upcoming thriller American Sweatshop, a social media content moderator (Lili Reinhart) can’t move on from a gruesome murder she’s forced to watch as part of her job. The movie’s trailer makes it look like a smart way to focus on the real horrors people have to endure to keep the internet running, which might make it a surprise hit when it hits theaters on September 19th.

It’s always sunny in Philabieldia.

Square Enix closed out today’s Nintendo Switch 2 partner showcase with a game that features names liable to send you into fits of confused laughter. Launching next year, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is an HD-2D action RPG with a silly but acceptable name. (Elliot? Really?)

But Philabieldia, the name for where the story takes place, is truly one of the most ridiculous fantasy names I’ve ever heard. Philabieldia, wow. You know what, I’m in. The ridiculous name signals to me this is the exact kind of high-fantasy, low-stakes silliness I enjoy in not-Final Fantasy Square Enix games.

The octopath less traveled.

Square Enix’s gorgeous throwback RPG series is making its way to the Switch 2 with Octopath Traveler 0. The title makes it sound like a prequel of sorts, and the publisher says players will “experience a story of restoration and retribution over the divine rings — an epic saga that unfolds across the realm of Orsterra.” It’s launching on December 4th.

An outlaw appears.

Star Wars Outlaws, the open-world sci-fi adventure that originally launched a year ago, is making its way to the Switch 2 on September 4th. Finally, you can take Nix on the go.

Let’s get tactical.

We got another look at the upcoming remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics, this one focused on the strategy game’s sweeping story. It won’t be long now before you can play it, as the game launches on September 30th. (It’ll be on both the Switch and Switch 2.)

It’s almost time for Princess Zelda’s summer vacation.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, the hack-and-slash-style spinoff of the Legend of Zelda series, covers the canonical events that led to Tears of the Kingdom. Most importantly, the game covers what Princess Zelda was up to hanging out in the past with the very handsome Goat King of Hyrule.

Frustratingly, there’s still no release date, with Nintendo sharing that the game will release some time “this winter.” Regardless, I’m looking forward to beating the bacon off an army of bokoblins.

Persona 3, reloaded.

Persona 3 Reload, the remake of Atlus’ Persona 3, is coming to the Switch 2 October 23rd. The game released last year to rave reviews on PC, PS5, and Xbox. Now, Atlus is finally ready to release the game on the Switch 2, because why should the other consoles get all the devil-summoning fun?

The classic strategy game is getting remastered with a new edition called Replanted. In addition to enhanced visuals, it will add both co-op and PvP play when it launches on the Switch 2 on October 23rd.

Katamari rolls onto the Switch.

The next game in the iconic series, called Once Upon a Katamari, has a time-traveling theme, so you’ll be rolling stuff through different time periods. It’ll launch on the original Switch on October 24th.

Monhun gets a little twisted.

To start off today’s Nintendo Direct partner showcase, Capcom showed off the latest entry in the Monster Hunter Stories series. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is coming to the Switch 2 next year.

Try as I might, I can’t get into the mainline Monster Hunter games. Since Monster Hunter Stories are more structured, turn-based RPGs where I’m riding the monsters instead of trying to fight them all the time, I might have to give this one a try when it comes out in 2026 and see if it finally sticks.

Amazon has invested in an AI startup that lets people make TV episodes.

Nintendo reverses course on Mario Kart World’s “intermission” track change.

The latest Mario Kart World update increases “the frequency of lap-type courses” that appear during online races.

The change seems to address concerns over Nintendo’s decision to nerf the “random” track trick last month, which allowed players to avoid having to drive to their next track location, and instead have a traditional three-lap race.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr is looking into Comcast’s “influence” over local stations.

In a letter to Comcast, Carr says he wants to make sure that the company’s “ability to exert influence” over local NBC affiliates doesn’t “undermine” their goal of serving the public interest.

Last week, Carr signed off on Paramount’s merger with Skydance — but only after Skydance said it would install a “bias monitor” at CBS, which recently canceled Stephen Colbert’s Late Show.

(Disclosure: Comcast is an investor in Vox Media, The Verge’s parent company.)

About that weird blue jeans ad.

Actor Sydney Sweeney is currently embroiled in a days-long “discourse” cycle about a campaign she shot with American Eagle. The ad — and whether it’s a eugenics dog whistle — is one thing. But I liked this Atlantic piece that zoomed out and put the outrage and online content cycle into perspective. Chat, is discourse cooked?

In Drag x Drive there are way more things to do than drag or drive.

Drag x Drive, the Switch 2’s 3-v-3 wheelchair basketball game, is coming out next month and Nintendo has shared a new trailer. The game, the first exclusive to make extensive use of the Switch 2’s mouse controls, will test more than just your hoopin’ skills.

The trailer showed off a ton of other things you can do like wheelchair races, skills challenges, and more. You can also create pick-up games with your friends, customize your player and their wheels, or practice against the computer when Drag x Drive comes out August 14th.

It’s getting chilly on Prehistoric Planet.

There have already been two great seasons of Apple’s prehistoric nature documentary series, and the next will shift the focus to the Ice Age, exploring the period across five episodes. Tom Hiddleston will be swapping in for Sir David Attenborough as the narrator when the show premieres on November 26th.

In A24’s Eternity, the afterlife is whatever you want it to be.

Larry (Miles Teller) needs a few beats to figure out that he’s dead in the new trailer for director David Freyne’s metaphysical romcom Eternity. But once he does, Larry realizes that he has to figure out a way to convince his recently-deceased wife Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) to spend the afterlife with him rather than her first husband Luke (Callum Turner). No firm release date just yet, but the film’s out this November.

Roku is adding new ways to find things to watch.

The streaming platform began testing a new homepage in June, and now it’s starting to roll out a new “surf mode” feature that lets you scroll through a TikTok-like feed of show and movie clips from The Roku Channel. It will also introduce two new rows for the top 10 shows and movies on Roku, as well as add an “In Theaters Now” row where you can explore movie trailers.

AI responses may include mistakes.

Today’s example is a Men’s Health article on Luka Doncic and his offseason workout routine. Pretty standard stuff, until the claim about a 42-inch vertical leap at the NBA Combine -- big if true, but it’s not, and he didn’t participate.

Nick Angstadt pointed out the error and its likely source, Google’s AI Overview. It carries the above warning, but as we know, many people never click through to the source anyway. The article has since been corrected, but now the AI summary incorrectly cites the original text.

Ayaneo is making a phone, a greenscale Game Boy, an Android DS, its own monster Strix Halo handheld, and more.

Not to be outdone by GPD, which teased a handheld so powerful it’s begging to be plugged into the wall, Ayaneo is teasing its own Strix Halo handheld — alongside a mountain of other product. There’s so much you’ll need to scrub through not one, but two “strategy sharing session” videos to see it all. The Strix Halo device will be the Ayaneo Next 2, and it’s promising its battery will be internal unlike the GPD one.

Peacemaker’s new trailer reveals how it’ll tidy up DC canon.

The HBO Max series is the last hangover from DC’s old universe, but it has to line up with the new world started by Superman. This trailer for season two hints at how that’ll happen, and if you guessed “multiverse” then you don’t get any prize because it was both obvious and inevitable.

Peacemaker returns with eight episodes from August 21st and, most importantly, will have an all-new dance number for the opening credits.

Coyote vs. Acme has a release date, but you’re not gonna like it.

We knew the Looney Tunes flick was launching in 2026, but it won’t be until August 28th. The date was announced at San Diego Comic-Con, where a trailer was shown too, but it’s not online yet.

Distributor Ketchup Entertainment will bring Coyote vs. Acme to theaters, having bought the rights after Warner Bros. canned the film in 2023 for a tax write-off. John Cena and Will Forte star alongside Wile E. Coyote.
