Production on the second season of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem adaptation is now underway, and the show has added Alfie Allen, Claudia Doumit, and Ellie De Lange to its cast.

With nearly 150 million subscribers around the world, Netflix has a commanding lead in the streaming wars. But it’s also facing heavy competition from deep-pocketed conglomerates like Disney, Apple, and AT&T, and an ongoing wave of narrow, targeted streaming sites like CBS All Access and DC Universe, which can draw on popular existing franchises for original content. As fewer companies are willing to license out their films and shows to other streaming sites, Netflix is pouring billions of dollars annually into its own original content. Follow along with The Verge as we look at Netflix’s new films and shows, its evolving strategies against new entrants in the market, and how it’s leveraging its technological and marketing lead.
The new show from BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg hasn’t actually premiered yet — it starts streaming on August 22nd — but Netflix has already confirmed it’ll be getting a second season. In the meantime, you can check out this new trailer that sets up the time-jumping family story.

Train Dreams, which was one of my favorite films at the festival this year, is streaming on November 21st, and will also be coming to select theaters this fall. It’s an understated and heartbreaking movie about coping with loss and change, telling a story that spans a single lifetime and is buoyed by some incredible performances from Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones. You can get a feel for it in the new trailer below.
Dungeons & Dragons and Netflix have teamed up on a new Stranger Things-themed board game bundle called Stranger Things: Welcome to the Hellfire Club. It will be released on October 7th and you can preorder it now.

“Early results are encouraging, outperforming pre-launch testing and demonstrating strong member interest in the new features,” Netflix says in its second-quarter letter to shareholders. About 50 percent of members have used it.
The new UI started rolling out globally in May, and it features a Home tab with a huge banner front and center that highlights something to watch.
Netflix is getting a big TV revamp

Nielsen data compiled by the Entertainment Strategy Guy newsletter shows that Netflix’s original titles have gradually been losing ground to original content from rival streaming platforms, such as Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV Plus, and Paramount Plus.
While Netflix owned 80 percent of the weekly top ten charts in 2021, that’s now down to 52 percent this year so far — and Disney Plus isn’t doing so hot either.

Netflix and New Era have teamed up for a collection of six new hats ranging in price from $31.99 for adjustable options to $47.99 for fitted ones. It includes two Squid Game styles and a couple of Stranger Things designs with the most subtle of the two featuring an upside down version of the New Era logo.
If you prefer to embrace advertising like Netflix did, there are also two hats featuring the streaming platform’s logo.
Beyond just the “coming soon” Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, this Anime Expo 2025 teaser from Netflix highlights other animated releases that are either new or continuing, like Sakamoto Days, Beastars, Leviathan, and Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, and the upcoming “cozy MMO,” Spirit Crossing, that’s part of its new plan for games.

Netflix only released the Sony-animated K-Pop Demon Hunters movie two weeks ago, but its catchy soundtrack is already beating out established K-pop artists in the US. “Your Idol” by the Saja Boys — the movie’s villainous and entirely fictional boy band backed by some respected voices — hit No.2 on the US Spotify chart Thursday, dethroning BTS as the highest-charting K-pop band in US Spotify history.
Following its theatrical preview earlier this summer, the second of Science Saru’s Dan Da Dan adaptation is finally streaming on Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu, and a few other streaming platforms depending on which territory you live in. You can also check out the new season’s opening and closing credits sequences on YouTube.
The streaming service has considered working with Spotify on “a number of projects such as music awards or a live concert series,” according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Netflix has also reportedly weighed airing celebrity interviews and documentaries about recent events.
The streamer has already started to build out its library with original, unscripted shows, which include its upcoming Star Search reboot, Building the Band, Love Is Blind, and the newly announced What’s in the Box with Neil Patrick Harris.

Netflix’s Squid Game: Unleashed, previously a mobile exclusive game, is coming to Chromebooks (and Android tablets) in the “coming weeks,” Google says. “You’ll be able to experience immersive gameplay on a bigger screen, with keyboard and mouse support, updated control layouts and graphics that take full advantage of your device’s display.”

Streaming platforms might be having a hard time bringing on new subscribers, but according to Nielsen’s most recent Gauge report, services like YouTube, Pluto TV, Roku, and Tubi overtook traditional broadcast TV and cable in terms of viewership for the first time last month.

Those are a few of the series and movies you can expect to hear — and see — more about at Netflix’s Tudum live event this evening. It kicks off at 8PM ET, and this time it’ll be streaming on Netflix itself as part of the company’s ongoing push into live programming.
Netflix’s Tudum 2025 event will stream live next month

This “special announcement” teaser for the upcoming second season of Netflix’s One Piece adaptation could just be a reminder that new episodes are on the way, but it (and all the little hoof prints at the end) are probably a sign that we can expect to hear new details about the show at this year’s Tudum event.
