Volkswagen ID.7, we hardly knew ye.
The slick, electric sedan first introduced in 2023 was supposed to make its North American debut last year, after selling well in Europe and China, but was delayed indefinitely. Now VW is cancelling the ID.7 for the US and Canada, citing a “challenging environment for EVs.”
The ID.7 was supposed to be the German automaker’s big push to dethrone the Tesla Model 3 as a top seller in the US, with its roomy interior, impressive aerodynamics, and over 400 miles of range. When he tested a German-spec version last year, Verge contributor Tim Stevens was “genuinely impressed” with the “sophisticated and stately” sedan. And with trucks and SUVs dominating the American landscape, the idea of a powerful, luxurious electric sedan seemed like a particularly novel idea — if a bit mistimed.

But with the Trump administration expected to eliminate EV incentives, Volkswagen is scrapping its plans to bring the ID.7 to North America. Still, the automaker says it remains committed to introducing new EVs in the US, as evidenced by the recent introduction of the long-awaited ID.Buzz minivan.
The news was first reported by The Car Guide, and was later confirmed by a VW spokesperson.
“Despite this, electric vehicles continue to be a core part of Volkswagen’s long-term product strategy, and new electric models will continue to be introduced for this market,” VW spokesperson Mark Gilles said in a statement. “We are encouraged by the enthusiastic reception of the ID. Buzz that was introduced late last year, and the strong ID.4 sales in January to date.”
In addition to the ID.Buzz, VW also sells the compact ID.4 SUV in the US — though sales of that vehicle have been down since a faulty door forced a stop sale order. (The order has since been lifted.) The automaker isn’t planning on releasing any new electric models in the US this year, nor has it said if or when the low-cost ID.2all hatchback will arrive stateside.
