Amazon finds a writer for its James Bond flick: Steven Knight.

Amazon announced its Q2 earnings results today, and at the same time said that Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, See, Dirty Pretty Things) will be the writer of its first 007 movie, which Denis Villeneuve is already set to direct.

According to Deadline’s inside sources, even with those roles locked down, it could be a while until we hear about who will carry on the starring role, as Knight works on the script and Villeneuve is finishing up Dune: Part Three.

Trump announces new “reciprocal” tariff hikes.

The Trump administration has revealed updated tariff rates on exports from dozens of countries due to take effect on August 7th, and an EO targeting alleged “inaction and retaliation” from Canada that will raise its rate on certain items from 25 to 35 percent starting August 1st.

CNN has a simple breakdown here of what this means so far. According to the WSJ, “the result will be significantly higher tariffs on virtually every US trading partner,” ranging from 10 to 41 percent, and a 40 percent penalty rate for goods “transshipped” to avoid tariffs.

OpenAI killed a ChatGPT feature that made some sensitive conversations publicly searchable.

The search-engine-indexing feature recently went viral online — if you knew where to look, anyone on the internet could access public ChatGPT logs where people seemed to confess to crimes, share trade secrets, and more potentially damning scenarios.

Dane Stuckey, OpenAI’s CISO, shared in an X post Thursday that it will be removed starting Friday morning.

That checkbox will disappear tomorrow.

Senator proposes calling off the TikTok ban — legally.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly ignored the bipartisan law banning TikTok from operating in the US unless it’s separated from Chinese parent company ByteDance. Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) is calling for a new way to avoid a ban without breaking the law. In a draft bill, Markey proposes letting TikTok operate in the US as long as it provides transparency into its content moderation and keeps US user data out of countries like China.

Google’s Pixel Watch 4 might stay the same price, too.

After a leak from Android Headlines showed no major pricing changes for the Pixel 10 lineup, the outlet has shared another rumor that suggests the 41mm Pixel Watch 4 will start at the same $349 price tag for the Wi-Fi version, increasing to $399 for the LTE variant.

Meanwhile, Android Headlines says the larger 45mm Pixel Watch 4 could cost $399 for the Wi-Fi version and $449 with LTE.

A new leak shows off Google’s next budget-friendly Pixel Buds.

Android Headlines published renders of the unannounced Pixel Buds 2A in a light purple color that Google will apparently call “Iris.” I like it. A pair of gray buds showed up in a recent Evan Blass leak, but Android Headlines reports that those are actually a new color for the Pixel Buds Pro 2.

Google is expected to announce a bunch of Pixel hardware at its August 20th event.

Update: Added detail about potential new gray earbuds.

Bose is partnering with Epson for new home theater projectors.

Epson has already tip-toed into the all-in-one projector market with its EpiqVision Mini, but the company is looking to expand its consumer-friendly offerings. Yesterday Epson announced a new partnership and a new lineup of all-in-one projectors featuring “Sound by Bose technology” that will launch in the US and China in September 2025.

There are no other details, but the Bose partnership could help Epson compete with companies like Xgimi and Anker who already offer affordable all-in-one solutions.

Apex Legends’ new season, Showdown, is optimized for Switch 2.

EA’s battle royale shooter got a performance bump once the Switch 2 launched, but during the Partner Direct showcase, they announced the August 5th update for Apex Legends will include a Switch 2-native edition, with enhanced resolution and framerate.

The new season also brings Wildcard, a new permanently added game mode on all platforms that has tweaks to speed up gameplay, lets teams have more than one of a particular hero, and includes second chance respawns once your team is eliminated.

Monhun gets a little twisted.

To start off today’s Nintendo Direct partner showcase, Capcom showed off the latest entry in the Monster Hunter Stories series. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is coming to the Switch 2 next year.

Try as I might, I can’t get into the mainline Monster Hunter games. Since Monster Hunter Stories are more structured, turn-based RPGs where I’m riding the monsters instead of trying to fight them all the time, I might have to give this one a try when it comes out in 2026 and see if it finally sticks.

Proton is adding yet another privacy-focused app to its arsenal.

The company has introduced Proton Authenticator, an open-source two-factor authentication app that can sync 2FA codes across devices using end-to-end encryption. Though Proton’s password manager already comes with a built-in 2FA feature, Proton says using its standalone Authenticator offers an “extra layer of security” by generating codes in a separate app.

Proton Authentication is available for free on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Fighting inflation, one Game Boy game at a time.

Incube8 Games, which sells new games that run on cartridges in old Game Boys, has dropped prices across almost all its titles by an average of 22.5 percent, “to keep retro gaming accessible” as prices rise elsewhere. It insists the price drop is permanent, attributing it to “improved production management and ongoing process optimizations,” and says product quality won’t be changing.

When is a Tesla Robotaxi not a Robotaxi?

When it’s in the Bay Area. Tesla has sent out invites for its “ride-hailing service,” conspicuously absent any Robotaxi branding.

Tesla doesn’t have permits for autonomous taxis in California, so its rides include a supervisor in the driver’s seat, who Reuters reports must be “ready to take over at all times” — in Austin the supervisor sits in the passenger seat. A first fan video shows the car doing most of the work, but the human driver’s hands always stay near the wheel.

Here comes the UK’s porn crackdown.

Ofcom is now investigating whether four companies that collectively run 34 pornography sites are complying with new Online Safety Act (OSA) rules that require them to have “highly effective age checks” in place — the same rules that are widely restricting parts of the internet across the UK. Other OSA investigations were already underway, but these are the first to fall under the age verification requirements.

Back doors go both ways.

After years of the US casting doubt on Huawei tech for alleged security threats, now China gets a turn. The country’s Cyberspace Administration reportedly called Nvidia execs in to explain “loopholes and backdoor” vulnerabilities in the H20 AI chips designed specifically to sell in China. It follows an antitrust investigation opened last year.

Then again, this could all be posturing — China wants its own chip industry to thrive, and Nvidia’s dominance makes that difficult.

Satya Nadella was good for his $80 billion.

Earlier this year there were a lot of questions over the $100 billion investment into The Stargate Project, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was quick to defend the software giant’s investment in cloud and AI data center projects. Microsoft posted its Q4 2025 fiscal earnings yesterday, revealing that Azure surpassed $75 billion in revenue over the year. Microsoft is also spending $30 billion on its AI infrastructure investments next quarter, which totals $120 billion over a year if it keeps that spending up.

Nintendo reverses course on Mario Kart World’s “intermission” track change.

The latest Mario Kart World update increases “the frequency of lap-type courses” that appear during online races.

The change seems to address concerns over Nintendo’s decision to nerf the “random” track trick last month, which allowed players to avoid having to drive to their next track location, and instead have a traditional three-lap race.
