Galaxy AI in the house.

No surprise there. Guessing AI is going to be a big part of this presentation. The place is filling up with about 10 minutes to go.

Congress may not have had to consider all possible alternatives to a ban, Sotomayor says.

Liberal justice Sonia Sotomayor says that if the court believes only intermediate First Amendment scrutiny applies to the data protection concerns, then the government is only required to use “reasonable means” to address their interests.

The fact that Uber and Lyft didn’t oppose this Mass. ballot measure to allow drivers to unionize tells you everything.

Progressives say the state measure, which won 54-46, is a distraction from the prevailing goal of reclassifying drivers as employees. Even the drivers say they aren’t opposed to the measure, but would prefer a more comprehensive fix. The ballot measure is the first of its kind in the US.

Tony Fadell calls out Sam Altman for “spouting shit.”

iPod co-creator and Nest founder Tony Fadell spoke—how should I say this—candidly about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco yesterday.

We are using this stuff, and we don’t even know how it works. And believe me, I understand. I’ve been doing AI for 15 years, people, I’m not just spouting shit. I’m not Sam Altman, okay?

If we don’t have transparency on data, we don’t have have transparency on hallucinations, you are setting yourself up for a fucking disaster.

The Eater app just dropped in the App Store.

After years of demand, our friends over at Eater just released their app for iOS, which helps you find nearby restaurants they’ve covered with over 10,000 maps in more than 100 cities. (Tip: if you’re looking to show off to friends and family, the Heatmaps are a great way to discover the hottest new restaurants.)

Download it from the App Store right now and read more about the app on Eater. (And for all of our disclosure enthusiasts, Eater is owned by Vox Media, The Verge’s parent company.)

Celebrate 2004 Week with retro Verge gear!

You might have heard that it’s 2004 Week on The Verge. There are lots of awesome, super nostalgic stories that you absolutely need to go check out right now.

BUT before you do that, you should also check out the collection of new retro gear that we made to celebrate. We have a T-shirt, a tote bag, a water bottle, and some stickers, all with the Verge 2004 logo (which we’re pretty sure nobody at Kazaa can sue us over at this point). We love it, and we think you will too.

2004 was a great year.

In descending order of importance, it was the year I got my first boyfriend, the year Veronica Mars came out, and the year when much of our digital world was created. It was also the year when some incredible music was released. Kazaa is long gone so we’ve put together this playlist to set the vibes as we revisit 2004. Enjoy!

Best new music site.

Pitchfork was the music tastemaker of the blog era. Now, after media empire Condé Nast acquired it and eventually gutted the staff, several former Pitchfork writers are launching a (mostly) worker-owned music site called Hearing Things. NYT has the backstory of how it came together.

(In an era where everyone is starting newsletters, I’m excited for a new, good old fashioned homepage to bookmark.)

Happy almost Friday, folks.

I’m real excited for the weekend — we’re gearing up for Fleet Week here in San Francisco, so lots of rooftop shenanigans and a Blue Angels show. Until then, I cannot stop banging this song from Crowded House. I’ve probably looped it 20 times today.

I know, I know, I’m such a zoomer for this. It’s just so good.

“The Titanic was an insurance scam” is my new favorite conspiracy theory.

The claim that the Titanic was swapped with a sister ship and intentionally sunk for an insurance payout is, according to Reuters, a long-running and meritless rumor.

But it’s entirely new to me! And extremely hilarious! You should treat this (and anything else on that cursed site) with the gravity and weight of fanfiction, but let’s be real, fanfiction is fun.

A spectacular failure.

Lionsgate parted ways with marketing consultant Eddie Egan, who was in charge of the materials for the Megalopolis trailer that was recently pulled after quotes used for it were found to have been fabricated, reported Deadline.

An investigation found that the made-up snippets, purported to be from reviews panning director Francis Ford Coppola’s past work, were indeed AI-generated, as many suspected, the outlet writes.

NFT FTX DAO WTF?

I had to the good fortune of reading an early copy of Andrew Chow’s smartly researched and brightly written new book, Cryptomania (which I always say to the tune of “Lisztomania”). It joins Zeke Faux’s Number Go Up as one of the great chronicles of the crypto boom, and it’s out this week.

I have some edit notes for David Brooks.

Maybe the fears around AI are overblown, but if you’re going to argue that the human mind is more creative than a computer, then maybe you want to write sentences that are less embarrassing than what GPT might spit out.

As a copyeditor would say: watch for repetition.

All this talk about Kamala Harris’s record...

but what about her favorite record?

Sure, the Brat summer memes might be the most prevalent ones for the new Democratic presidential candidate’s campaign. But I think this charming Kamala Holding Vinyls generator has the legs for great group chat fodder for weeks to come.
